For the proposed tenth book, however, the reconstructions of Roman buildings which would be most pertinent for our purpose here, nothing has been found, even though Vasari reports that Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola (1507-73) was employed by the academy shortly after his arrival in Rome in 1537 di misurare interamente l'anticaglie di Roma ('to measure fully the antiquities of Rome'). Kommentar: Zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung des vorliegenden Bandes war meine Dissertation nicht nur bereits seit 2002 (also ca. 2 Jahre) online verfügbar, sondern Campbell konnte spätestens auf dem Studientag, den ich im April 2004 in Rom an der Bibliotheca Hertziana organisiert und zu dem ich Campbell auch eingeladen hatte (er präsentierte dort seine Hypothesen über eine Beziehung des portugiesischen Zeichners zum Berliner Codex), von der – noch hypothetischen – Beziehung des Berliner Codex Destailleur D zum Akademie-Projekt wissen. Es befremdet, dass diese Hypothese hier nicht erwähnt oder z.B. in Frage gestellt wird…

Few drawings of antiquities are attributed to Vignola, and his Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura (1562) refers only to the Pantheon and the Theatre of Marcellus, although he claimed in a letter to Vasari that it was cavata dalle antiquitati di Roma ('taken from the antiquities of Rome'). [FN 100: Davis 1989, p. 188] The dal Pozzo library had two editions of Vignola (see A.IX/3, Appendix II), and there are also drawings after Vignola of the church of S. Andrea in Via Flaminia and the Palazzo Farnese at Piacenza (RL 10454, 10454v, 10499, 10501 and 10502, to bi catalogued in A.X).

Most of the Accademia della Virtù's tenth book had in any case been anticipated by Sebastiano Serlio (1475-1554), who, in 1540, was the first to publish an illustrated book of antiquities, Il terzo libro di Sebastiano Serlio Bolognese, nel qual si figurano, e descriuono le antiquita di Roma, e le altre che sono in Italia, the third part of an intended even-book architectural treatise.

Kommentar: Die Publikation von Serlios Drittem Buch dürfte weder Tolomei noch den anderen Akademikern entgangen sein: Dass es im Programm nicht erwähnt wird (wie auch Philandriers Annotationes) könnte man immerhin so deuten, dass es gerade nicht als eine Antizipation der eigenen Planungen angesehen wurde, wofür seine offensichtlichen Mängel in der Genauigkeit der Wiedergabe der antiken Bauten sprächen.
